Spain defeats Holland in worldcup final

Spain has won the FIFA World Cup final. In a nerve-wracking match, the Spanish team beat the Dutch with 1-0 with a goal by Iniesta in extra time.

The first half of the match saw no goals, but plenty of yellow cards. The Dutch team collected three yellow cards for foul play, their Spanish opponents gathered two cards.

No goals in the second half either, but, to keep up the 'spirits' of the first half, another 3 yellow cards for offenses committed by the Dutch squad.

On to extra time then. And again, 3 yellow cards on the Dutch side. For John Heijtinga, it was his second yellow card in the match, which left Holland with only ten men on the field. But then.... a goal. By Spanish midfielder Andrès Iniesta. Initial confusion whether it was off-side or not, referee Webb consulting with his two assistant referees, but there it was on the scoreboards: Spain 1, Holland 0.

One nation's dream come true, another nation's hope evaporated. And another trophy to take home for Spain, who won the European championship in 2008.

Prior to the game, a dazzling opening ceremony made jaws drop. But the true star of the evening was Nelson Mandela, who, just a week short of his 92nd birthday, was driven across the field in a golf cart. Madiba looked frail, but was beaming and waving at the crowds.
